“Inspired by the Japanese ‘first press’ method this is a delicate, refined beer that needed an equally delicate and refined piece of art. This was Kumiko Matsumoto’s first time producing beer art for us, but definitely not her last. It’s a lovely piece, so different from anything else we’ve produced. It has an elegance and restraint that’s perfect for this beer. A collaborative effort between Kumiko and Tim Gibson. The initial release of the beer was just tap only for our ‘Tokyo Taphouse’ event during Wellington on a Plate, so the challenge was to develop tap badge concept and bring it into a printed can. As is the case with a lot of Tim’s work, we were presented with a number of concepts that we could have easily chosen. Spoilt for choice, we went for the simple approach that celebrated the simplicity of the beer and Kumi’s beautiful koi art. This was brewed for Tokyo Tap House. It was a WOAP event hosted in 91 Aro over four nights. We flew in VICE-famous Japanese chef Yoya Takahashi to cook the food, it was ace. Yoya is a loose unit.” – Garage Project
